China’s vocational degrees rising as students seek skills over prestigious universities

When the results of China’s gruelling National Higher Education Entrance Examination – or gaokao – were released last summer, Lin Gangming was surprised to learn that he had scored high enough to attend some of the country’s top universities. But instead of chasing prestige, the student from Yangjiang, a small coastal city in Guangdong province, chose a different path: Shenzhen Polytechnic University – a public undergraduate vocational college in the province. Stories like Lin’s, covered by the...

State of Texas: GOP AG hopefuls agree on policy but clash over records in Dallas debate

The four candidates vying for the Republican nomination for Texas Attorney General — State Sen. Mayes Middleton, R-Galveston, State Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Houston, former Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Reitz and U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas — agree on almost everything. However, that didn't stop them from attacking each other on their records and experience during Tuesday night's Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) debate.

A judge ruled Tesla still has to pay $243 million for a fatal crash involving Autopilot

Tesla is still on the hook for $243 million after a US judge rejected the EV maker's bid to overturn a jury verdict from last year. On Friday, US District Judge Beth Bloom upheld the jury's decision to hold Tesla partially responsible for a deadly crash that happened in 2019 and involved the self-driving Autopilot feature. The judge added that there was enough evidence to support the jury's verdict, which was delivered in August 2025 and ordered Tesla to pay millions in compensatory and punitive damages to the two victims in the case. Judge Bloom added that Tesla didn't present any new arguments to dispute the decision.  While the case has been moving along recently, the incident dates back to several years ago when the driver of a Model S, George McGee, was using Tesla's Autopilot feature while bending down to retrieve a dropped phone. The Model S then crashed into an SUV that was parked on a shoulder, where Naibel Benavides Leon and Dillon Angulo were standing aside. Benavides was killed in the crash, while Angulo was severely injured. Tesla hasn't publicly commented on Judge Bloom's decision yet, but it won't be a surprise to see the company appeal the latest ruling with a higher court. Tesla's lawyers previously tried to pin the blame on the driver, claiming that the Model S and Autopilot weren't defective. As this major case plays out, Tesla is also facing several investigations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for both its Autopilot and Full-Self Driving features. Calls for better supervision of Hong Kong’s campsites after areas inundated

Campers and hikers have urged Hong Kong authorities to step up public education, law enforcement and impose foot traffic limits at campsites after some areas were flooded with visitors during the Lunar New Year holiday. A visit by the South China Morning Post on Saturday to Ham Tin Wan, a beach in Sai Kung, found about 50 visitors and 30 tents. Empty plastic bottles, used tissue paper and chocolate wrappers were seen lying on the sand and in bushes and shrubs. Officers from the Agricultural,...

The Human Root of Trust – public domain framework for agent accountability

The Human Root of Trust – public domain framework for agent accountability

I've spent my career at the intersection of identity, trust, and distributed systems. The thing I keep thinking about: every digital system we've built assumes a human is on the other end. Bank accounts, contracts, API keys — all designed around human singularity. That assumption has already broken. AI agents are transacting, communicating, and signing contracts autonomously — passing identity checks designed for people, with no human visibly in the loop. The Human Root of Trust is my attempt to name the problem and sketch the architecture: three pillars (proof of humanity, hardware-rooted device identity, action attestation), a six-step trust chain from human principal to cryptographic receipt, and two implementation paths. It's dedicated to the public domain. No patent. No product. No ask except that whoever picks this up carries the principle forward. https://humanrootoftrust.org Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47100935 Points: 6 # Comments: 1

Malaysia’s tuberculosis cases rise to above 3,000, health ministry flags risks

As Malaysians flock to Ramadan bazaars and breaking fast gatherings, the health ministry is reminding the public to observe tuberculosis (TB) precautions, especially in crowded and enclosed spaces. The statement said the latest detections brought the cumulative number of tuberculosis cases to 3,161 across Malaysia. “Crowded, enclosed and poorly...

Republicans breathe sigh of relief as Supreme Court axes Trump tariffs

The Supreme Court’s ruling that struck down the sweeping global tariffs at the heart of President Trump’s economic policies has produced enormous cracks in the GOP’s outward show of party unity. After spending the past year rallying behind Trump on virtually every facet of his second-term agenda, Republican lawmakers spanning the ideological spectrum are publicly...

The former prince was arrested on Thursday at his new home on the king's remote Sandringham estate in eastern Norfok on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Hong Kong to spend HK$6.8 billion buying back fire-ravaged Tai Po flats

Hong Kong authorities will spend about HK$6.8 billion (US$870 million) to buy back homes damaged in the deadly Tai Po fire from flat owners, offering HK$8,000 to HK$10,500 per square foot as part of a long-term resettlement plan involving HK$4 billion in public funds. Deputy financial secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun unveiled the plan on Saturday, ruling out on-site redevelopment of Wang Fuk Court, and saying authorities were inclined to demolish seven of the estate’s eight buildings and redevelop...

Gorton and Denton by-election: 'Much wider implications for the UK'

Gavin Lee is pleased to welcome fellow journalist Guillaume Gougeon. In his assessment, what may appear as a routine British by-election in Labour stronghold Gorton and Denton is far more consequential. Historically, by-elections in the United Kingdom serve as barometers of public sentiment toward the government in power. This contest unfolds at a moment of political vulnerability for the Prime Minister, following internal controversies and declining national polling numbers. The race has evolved into a three-way contest between Labour, the Greens and Nigel Farage's Reform UK.
