China and Germany have pledged to elevate ties as they seek to rebalance relations amid global uncertainties.Chinese President Xi Jinping told visiting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Beijing on Wednesday that he was “willing to work together with the chancellor to continuously advance the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Germany to new levels”.Merz echoed Xi’s call to strengthen bilateral relations, according to state broadcaster CCTV.“The more turbulent and complex the world becomes, the more China and Germany need to strengthen strategic communication and enhance strategic mutual trust,” Xi said, adding he had always attached great importance to ties between Beijing and Berlin.Xi said China and Germany should be “reliable partners supporting each other”, while Berlin should view China’s development objectively and rationally, and adopt a positive and pragmatic policy towards China.“Both sides should strike the right balance between competition and cooperation,” Xi added.Merz’s visit, his first since taking office in May, comes as Europe rebalances its ties with China under a more assertive American foreign policy led by US President Donald Trump.
