Damascus, Feb. 26 (SANA) Syria’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research signed a cooperation agreement with Hungary on Thursday to provide 250 scholarships for Syrian students across undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs. The agreement was signed at the ministry’s headquarters by Higher Education Minister Marwan Halabi and the Hungarian Embassy’s chargé d’affaires in Damascus, Soós István Gyula. Halabi said the deal marks the first official academic cooperation between the two countries following Syria’s liberation, adding that it strengthens bilateral ties in higher education. More than 800 students applied through online registration announced last December, he said, with 250 to be selected based on academic performance and eligibility criteria. Under the agreement, the Hungarian government will provide tuition waivers, accommodation support and monthly stipends for selected students. Halabi said the partnership could expand to include joint scientific research, exchange of expertise, visits by Hungarian professors and cooperation on quality assurance and accreditation programs between universities in both countries. Gyula hailed the signing as a step to provide broad support to Syrian youth across academic disciplines and added that cooperation would continue through academic partnerships, expert exchanges and student visits. The ministry had previously announced that the scholarships, funded by the Hungarian government for the 2026–2027 academic year, cover a wide range of fields including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, agriculture, veterinary medicine, economics, sciences, health sciences, nursing, fine arts, physical education, tourism and music education.
