‘Scream 7’ Somehow Had Even More Social Media Drama Left in It

Scream 7 scored an impressive opening weekend, despite some pretty “meh” reviews. No doubt that made the powers that be feel relieved that the drama surrounding the departure of Scream V and VI star Melissa Barrera—who was fired for social media posts showing support for Palestine amid the war in Gaza—didn’t hurt their bottom line after all. But somehow, a Scream 7 star still managed to court controversy on social media. Everything famous people do online is carefully scrutinized. And you would think that the Scream cast in particular—given that they’re part of a franchise that axed a main character because she dared to have an opinion and exercise her freedom of speech—would tread carefully on any public-facing platform. Which is why it’s startling that Scream 7 star Anna Camp reposted a tone-deaf Instagram story dismissing protests that urged boycotting the film as a show of support for Palestine. In a red-carpet interview with Variety, Scream 7 writer-director Kevin Williamson was asked about the protest and said, “I think people should listen to their inner self and do what feels good for them.” Perhaps that’s what was on Camp’s mind when she shared a since-deleted story that Variety described in detail; it was set to Taylor Swift’s “Karma” and read, “The boycott didn’t work. The critics hate didn’t work. The pathetic leaks didn’t work. What worked was audiences coming out and making the film a success.” March 1, however, Camp issued an apology on X: It has come to my attention that I reposted someone else’s story that does not reflect my personal beliefs . I have since deleted the repost because I absolutely meant no harm. I’m sorry to anyone who was affected ♥️ — Anna Camp (@TheRealAnnaCamp) March 2, 2026 “It has come to my attention that I reposted someone else’s story that does not reflect my personal beliefs,” she wrote. “I have since deleted the repost because I absolutely meant no harm. I’m sorry to anyone who was affected.” It could have indeed been a genuine mistake—but it’s also a reminder, not just for celebrities, to carefully consider what you throw out on social media, especially if it’s a repost. Camp will no doubt shake this off, and so will Scream: it surely won’t be long before Team Ghostface announces an eighth film in the series. Want more io9 news?
