A well-known hockey coach turned broadcaster and a Queen’s University physician are named as 2025 Order of Ontario recipients. Don Cherry and Dr. Jamaica Cass are two of 30 new appointments to the Order announced on Tuesday by Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont. In a news release, the Kingston-born Cherry was being recognized for his extensive philanthropy. In particular, supporting the military and police, youth sports and animal welfare through Don Cherry’s Pet Rescue Foundation. He also founded Rose Cherry’s Home for Kids, in honour of his late wife, and is a strong advocate for organ donation. Amherstview’s Cass was the first Indigenous woman in Canada to earn both a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy. Her leadership and mentorship advance Truth and Reconciliation, expand representation and transform health outcomes for Indigenous communities. A ceremony will take place in Toronto later this year.
