The world greeted with jubilation, anger or trepidation the news Sunday that Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed in the US-Israeli strikes on the Islamic republic one day earlier.
On Sunday in Karachi, at least nine protesters were killed during violent clashes outside the US consulate. The protesters rallied after US and Israeli strikes in Iran led to the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and attempted to force their way into the diplomatic compound. Police responded with gunfire and tear gas to disperse the crowd. The violence spread to other Pakistani cities where rallies also turned violent. Security around US diplomatic sites has been tightened.
At least three oil tankers sailing near the Strait of Hormuz came under fire Sunday as hundreds of vessels dropped anchor outside the narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. Tehran said it has closed navigation through the strait, used to transport a fifth of the world's oil exports, following the US-Israeli bombardment on Saturday.
