A top Russian MP and close Putin ally has claimed that Donald Trump’s war with Iran is “great news for Russia”, as rising chaos in the Middle East is set to push up oil prices21:56, 01 Mar 2026A top Russian MP and Russia leader Vladimir Putin’s ally has claimed that US President Donald Trump’s war with Iran is actually “great news for Russia”. This is because chaos in the Middle East is reportedly likely to push up oil prices and boost Russian profits.Anatoly Wasserman, speaking to Russian media, said the US and Israel could face huge trouble after attacking Iran, while Russia stands to gain in the short term. However, he warned that things could get tricky later. “In the short term, I think the consequences for us will be positive,” Wasserman said.“It’s clear that this conflict will cause oil prices to rise.”He further told Russian news outlet MK: “While oil now makes up only about one-eighth of our export income, its sales still bring in a significant amount.” In the long term, however, things could become a bit more complicated, Wasserman said.He continued: “Iran, to some extent, is part of the BRICS group. Not fully, but it does take part in many of the group’s consultations.“This could damage the reputation of the entire group. Even though BRICS is not directly involved in military matters, the great powers in the group are expected to show some strength.”BRICS is an influential coalition of major emerging economies, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China (2009), with South Africa joining in 2010.Designed to challenge Western-led global economic and political orders, the group expanded in 2024 and 2025 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Indonesia, representing roughly 45% of the world's population.Wasserman reportedly said it’s difficult to predict exactly how the situation around Iran will develop. He did not rule out that the US and Israel could face very serious problems in the near future as the conflict escalates.“For a while, the fighting will continue,” Wasserman said. “But I don’t know how long their missile stockpiles in the region will last.”Article continues belowHe added: “According to various estimates, the US and Israel may have stockpiled around a thousand long-range missiles capable of reaching Iran. They also reportedly have a couple of thousand anti-aircraft missiles to intercept return fire.“But if they use all of these up and Iran holds out, then they will face very big problems.”For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.
