A line 9 tram derailed in the northern Italian city on Friday, killing at least one person and injuring 38.
Published on 27/02/2026 - 18:24 GMT+1 A tram derailed and crashed into a building in Milan on Friday afternoon, killing one person and injuring 38 others, according to the fire brigade. The line 9 tram derailed at around 16:00 in Viale Vittorio Veneto whilst travelling towards Porta Genova. The vehicle struck passers-by and a shop window. Of the 38 injured, one person's condition is critical, six are in serious condition, and the rest suffered minor injuries, according to medical personnel at the scene. Five rescue vehicles and 25 firefighters responded to the incident. Ambulances and medical personnel are treating the injured. The fire brigade initially reported one person trapped under the tram, but later said no one was beneath the vehicle. Milan's Public Prosecutor's Office will open an investigation, while Chief Prosecutor Marcello Viola went to the scene of the accident, media reported. The cause of the incident remains unknown.
