8:57 AM PST · February 27, 2026 A new set of main series Pokémon games is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, marking the 10th installment in the series. In a livestream celebrating the release of the first Pokémon games exactly thirty years ago, the company unveiled “Pokémon Winds and Waves,” an open-world game set across a vast ocean of islands. The three new starter Pokémon were announced as well: Browt, a grass-type “bean chick” that looks like an Angry Bird; Pombon, a Pomeranian-inspired fire-type who better not evolve into a bipedal man; and Gecqua, a water-type gecko with big pink eyes. Image Credits:The Pokémon Company Leakers have rumored that the new game is set in a region inspired by Indonesia and Southeast Asia — while the trailer doesn’t explicitly confirm this, it makes a good case for proving the rumors correct, showing us lush jungles, seaside mountains, tropical towns, and even underwater reefs. Fans have also honed in on a suspicious-looking cloud in the trailer, which looks like a Gyarados-slash-Lapras flying through the sky — perhaps it’s a nod to a new legendary Pokémon? Pokémon already explored a tropical island vibe in the Hawaii-inspired “Sun and Moon” games, which came out nearly ten years ago, but there’s still a ton to explore in that sort of setting, especially now that the franchise is embracing open-world maps. Not all tropical archipelagos are alike! Main series Pokémon games usually get released in November, which would mean that we have almost two years to wait before we can explore this new region… but hopefully we’ll be surprised. It already seems like forever ago since “Pokémon Scarlet and Violet” came out in 2022. But when that game came out, fans criticized it for feeling rushed and rife with glitches. So if a later release date means we’ll get something incredible, I’m happy to wait. In the meantime, Pokémon fans can buy reissues of the “Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen” games today for the Switch… but they cost $20. It’s too bad that there isn’t an extremely easy and legally dubious way to get those games on your phone for free. Pokémon Winds and Waves are coming to Switch 2 in 2027

The Pokémon leakers were right: the Gen 10 games are called Pokémon Wind and Pokémon Waves. The Pokémon Company confirmed the titles during a 30th anniversary stream on Pokémon Day. The games are set to hit Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027. (A Game Freak leak last October suggested Wind and Waves would be out this year with DLC to follow in 2027.) According to the Pokémon account on X, in Wind and Waves, “you’ll travel across beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves that ebb and flow. You’ll also team up with Pokémon to overcome challenges and even the forces of nature!” They’ll be playable in 11 languages, including Brazilian Portuguese. Introducing the first partner Pokémon from #PokemonWindsWaves! Say hello to Browt 🌱, Pombon 🔥, and Gecqua 💧. Who will you partner with on this adventure, Trainers? pic.twitter.com/UfKtE5lszu — Pokémon (@Pokemon) February 27, 2026 A trailer for the two games revealed the three new starter Pokémon: Browt, Pombon and Gecqua. As suggested by their colors and environments they’re shown in, they are grass, fire and water types, respectively. Other Pokémon that were featured include Pikachu (sporting fetching beachwear) and Oddish. The trailer, which reveals a new region for the series, ends by taking us into the ocean to gawk at an number of water Pokémon. The Pokémon Presents stream on Friday included updates for many other games in the franchise, including the battle-focused Pokémon Champions (a modern spin on the likes of Pokémon Stadium). That will debut on Nintendo Switch in April before arriving on iOS and Android later this year. Cross-play will be available between the three platforms. It was also confirmed that Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness will hit the GameCube library on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on Switch 2 in March. Pokémon Day marks the 30th anniversary of the series’ debut with the 1996 release of Pocket Monsters Red and Pocket Monsters Green (later released as Pokémon Red and Pokém

Pokémon Winds and Waves launch on the Switch 2 in 2027

It's time to say goodbye to the Paldea region because a new generation of mainline Pokémon games are on the way. During today's big Pokémon Presents stream, Nintendo announced that Pokémon Wind and Waves are the next installments in the core game series. The games will launch in 2027 and are exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo also shared a trailer showcasing a new trio of starter pokémon - Browt, Pombon, and Gecua - and a number of different environments you'll be able to explore as you play through the games. In addition to establishing that Wind and Waves takes place in an island setting, the trailer really highlights how much … Read the full story at The Verge.

Pokémon Presents 2026: all the news and trailers

It’s that time of year: a whole bunch of Pokémon news is incoming. February 27th is the date the franchise first debuted, and The Pokémon Company uses it as a chance to outline its plans in a Pokémon Presents showcase. Last year’s event included the announcement of Pokémon Champions, and the 2026 edition should be particularly big, as this year represents the franchise’s 30th anniversary. TCPi says simply that it will feature “the latest news and updates from the world of Pokémon,” without getting into any specifics. But there’s a good chance we’ll hear about the next mainline entry in the series given that Scarlet and Violet launched back in 2022. Personally I’m hoping for an unexpected spinoff along the lines of Pokémon Sleep. One thing we do know is that after the show ends, both Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are getting a re-release on the Switch. The showcase airs at 9AM ET, and you can keep up with the most important news right here. Gotta watch it all. Nintendo’s next big Pokémon presentation is on February 27th
