Please try againThe Green Government Fund was launched in 2019, working towards a target of “net-zero emissions by 2050.”“As Canadians take action on climate change, the Government of Canada is reducing emissions in its own operations and using practical solutions to support a cleaner, more resilient future,” Shafqat Ali, president of the Treasury Board Secretariat, said in a news release.Previous projects have included solar panel, geothermal and other sustainable energy retrofits to government buildings.Recent projects have included $900,000 each for testing the combination use of heat pumps and thermal energy storage in federal buildings.Other projects include advancing hydrogen and electrified aircraft development for the Royal Canadian Air Force fleet and evaluating the uses of “Low Carbon Fuel (renewable diesel and biodiesel)” within the Canadian navy’s fleet.Another $405,000 was flagged for reducing emissions from clothing and textile procurement within government to “maximize circularity and reuse.”The Treasury Board Secretariat houses the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat Centre for Greening Government and and Environment and Climate Change Canada. It also leads and organizes emission-reduction effort within the federal government. In a news release, the federal government said that departments “are invited to submit applications to an annual Call for Proposals.”The announcement arrives amid criticism of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government over its reshaping of Canadian climate policy. Several key policy pillars from the former Justin Trudeau government have been scrapped or reimagined.A few weeks ago Carney ended Trudeau-era electric vehicle mandates in favour of purchase rebates.Other policies like suspending electricity regulations in Alberta have also garnered criticism. However, the Green Government Fund, although more modest and less controversial than other Trudeau-era policies, has remained.“Greening government operations is an important part of Canada’s plan to cut emissions and build climate resilience,” Julie Dabruisn, minister of Environment, Climate Change and Nature, said in the news release. “These projects show how practical, made-in-Canada solutions can reduce pollution, save energy, and support a cleaner future for Canadians.” Get the latest from Matteo Cimellaro straight to your inbox Join the Conversation This website uses cookies to personalize your content (including ads), and allows us to analyze our traffic.
