The three MPs are the most the Liberals have had in Alberta since four were elected in 2015.The Liberals now have 169 MPs compared to 141 Conservatives, 22 from the Bloc Quebecois, seven New Democrats, one Green, and three vacant seats. A party requires 172 seats to form a majority government.Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre stated in a social media post that Carney was trying to seize “a costly Liberal majority government.”“Matt Jeneroux has betrayed the people of Edmonton Riverbend who voted for affordable food and homes, safe streets, and a strong resource sector,” he wrote. “Conservatives will continue our fight for a Canada that’s affordable, safe, and self-reliant.”Jeneroux was elected as a provincial MLA for the Progressive Conservative Party in the riding of Edmonton-Southwest in 2012. He was defeated in the 2015 provincial election but moved to federal politics later the same year and won four consecutive elections, most recently last March.Last November, he wrote to the Conservative Party Whip indicating he intended to resign from Parliament at an unspecified later date.
